ABOUT ME

Or watch as I attempt to describe myself without coming off as narcissistic or overly self-deprocating.

Hi.  I'm a fledging author with a love for telling weird, genre-busting, and humorous stories. My work usually blends self-aware genre fiction and humour with larger, humanistic themes.

I first began writing at a fairly young age. The first “book” I ever completed was about Dinosaurs, which I wrote at the age of 10. It was terrible and it will never be published or leave my closet. Still, as bad as that first foray was, looking back on it, it did contain many of the elements that would later make up my writing. Namely, combining my own nerdy interests with pop science, world building, and a flippant point of view.

My influences are many and varying, and my work tends to draw from them extensively. From anime, cartoons, comic books, D&D, films and video games, to Hip-Hop and Rock, to popular and technical science and history, to Restoration literature and poetry, to Shakespeare and the Beats, to classic literature and science fiction, to horror, high fantasy, and stand-up comedy. I’ve always had a disparate love for many different topics, movements, and genres, and my writing tends to reflect a weird Frankensteinian hodgepodge of all these influences.

My work also tends to draw a lot from history. I’m a self-admitted history dork, having graduated from McGill University with a degree in History and Education. In terms of research, my topics of interest have included the history of science and medicine (particularly surgery), public health, the development of national identity, the golden age of piracy, alchemy, folklore, and esoteric, magical, or otherwise “supernatural” beliefs during the modern and early modern period. Particularly, I’ve always been interested in the ways that popular science and pseudoscience can be used as a lens to examine cultural norms, as well as the ways they have been used to shape nationalistic narratives.

I currently live in Montreal, Quebec with my dog, who I love very much.
